Within world’s top 1% in thesis citations in three fields: engineering, computer science, and mathematics Being selected in three fields for four consecutive years … proof of global influence of his research performances Report of more than 100 theses in internationally prestigious journals for last three years, over 37,000 citations [November 17, 2022] Prof. PARK Ju-hyeon (54, above photo) of YU Department of Electric Engineering was selected again as 1% of world’s top researchers. He has been selected as one of the most influential researchers in the world for eight consecutive years since 2015. Clarivate Analytics (hereinafter referred to as Clarivate), a world information analysis service company, announced the list of the most influential researchers in 2022, i.e. top 1% researchers with many thesis citations (Highly Cited Researchers, hereinafter referred to as HCR) on the 15th. Especially, it is surprising that Prof. Park was selected as HCR of the world in three fields: engineering, computer science, and mathematics. He put his name in three fields of HCR for four consecutive years since 2019. It is very rare in the world that a researcher is selected as the world’s top 1% researchers in three or more fields. To that extent, the research performances of Prof. Park have shown his influence in wide fields and his unrivaled research power is accepted among world-level researchers, too. Prof. Park has become a world authority in nonlinear control system analysis field with use of traditional control theory and neuro/fuzzy intelligence theory. He has been showing excellent research performances in basic studies on controller design for stability analysis and stabilization of various linear and non-linear dynamic systems such as time delay systems, complex networks, neural networks, cyber physical systems, multi-object systems, and moving object control systems. He has been making active research activities such as report of more than 100 theses in internationally prestigious journals for past three years in the fields concerned. Especially, he has more than 37,000 citations of theses and as many as more than 100 theses cited more than 100 times.Prof. Park was selected as a regular member of Korea Academy of Science and Technology in 2017 and is working as an editing member of many international academic journals including IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, a world academic journal. Prof. Chandragiri Venkata Reddy (below photo) of YU Faculty of Computer Science was also selected in HCR Cross Field (highly influential researchers to other fields’ researchers); as a result, two YU profiteers put their names in HCR this year. HCR is selected in 22 fields consisting of 21 fields including science and social science, etc. and one field of Cross Field. Clarivate selects HCR based on top 1% of theses (highly cited papers) which were the most cited in corresponding year in each field based on its Web of Science. HCR was selected this year based on citation numbers of theses reported for 11 years from January 2011 to December 2021. This year, 6,938 researchers put their names in HCR this year. In case of Korea, 63 researchers had been selected as HCR.

Three from GTEP (Glocal Trade Expert Incubating Program) Team - Production of extraordinarily many successful candidates Dreamed customs officer with GTEP Team activities supported by the government Fruit of support such as special lectures on trade theory and practice during vacation, mentoring by senior alumni of incumbent customs officers [November 11, 2022] <YU alumni who passed 2022 39th Customs Officer Exam (From the left, KO Beom-seok, LEE Hyuk, HWANG Soo-yeong, and SHIN Ho-yeong)> YU(President CHOI Oe-chool) produced five successful candidates of 2022 39th Customs Officer Exam. Customs officer exam is the most difficult in foreign trade related license exams. Graduates of YU who put their names in successful candidate lists were CHO Bo-seong (35, graduate from Department of International Trade), KO Beom-seok (29, graduate from Department of Trade), SHIN Ho-yeong (28, graduate from Department of International Trade), LEE Hyuk (26, graduat from Department of English Language and Literature), and HWANG Soo-yeong (26, Graduate from Department of International Trade). Especially, three of them, i.e. KO Beom-seok, LEE Hyuk, and HWANG Soo-yeong, took attention because they are from YU GTEP Team. It is unusual that three successful candidates were produced by a small single team. When considering that 169 successful candidates were produced in the customs officer exam of this year, this is a surprising performance. Most of the students who belong to GTEP Team consist of related majors such as Department of Foreign Trade but many are unfamiliar with customs officer exam. Most of them get knowledge and related information on the job of customs officer through the activities of GTEP Team. YU GTEP Team provides a lot of support to students who are preparing for trade-related exams as a specialized institution for training youth trade experts. It supports online lectures for acquiring trade-related licenses such as customs officers and intensively conducts special lectures on trade theory and practical knowledge during vacations. It also operates special lectures and mentoring programs with invitation of seniors working as customs officers as well as alumnus seniors of current customs officers who are the consultants of YU GTEP Team. The graduates, who passed the exam, said, “We could get some knowledge and had the dream through the activities of GTEP Team. Especially, when listening to currently working seniors about field experiences, we could feel the attraction of the job of customs officers. Invited special lectures of senior customs officers and practical professionals were highly helpful in preparing for the exam.” GTEP Team is managed by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Korea International Trade Association. YU implemented TI (Trade Incubator) Project of the Ministry of Industrial Resources in 2002 as the start and has been operating GTEP Project for 21 years until now; it is operating Class 16 of GTEP Team. In the country, 20 universities including YU are operating GTEP teams. YU GTEP Team got highest evaluation result in 2021 (Class 15) Performance Evaluation and is recognized as an incubator to cultivate youth trade professionals.

Three undergraduate students in the 4th grade of the department, “Study on blood sugar variability and the course of severe pneumonia” The greater the early glycemic variability, the higher the mortality rate of patients with severe pneumonia and the longer the hospitalization period Published in the latest issue of <Annals of Medicine>, an international academic journal in the field of internal medicine [November 2, 2022] <Research Team of Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine, YU School of Medicine> (Clockwise from left above, Professor JEONG Seung-min Jung, 4th grade students KIM Eun-song, KIM Ji-yeong, and KIM Seong-ho) Students of YU College of Medicine published a thesis on blood sugar volatility and the course of severe pneumonia in an international journal. A research team consisting of seniors of the YU College of Medicine conducted a retrospective study by collecting data from pneumonia patients hospitalized in the ICU of YU Hospital for about two years. As the analysis result of the data, it was fund that, in case of patients with pneumonia, the greater the glycemic variability within 48 hours of entering the intensive care unit, the higher the mortality rate within 28 days and the longer the hospitalization period in the intensive care unit. The research team explained the performance of the research saying, “The result of the study shows that early blood glucose volatility affects the prognosis of severe pneumonia not only in diabetic patients but also in patients with glycated hemoglobin less than 7.5%, whose blood sugar control is relatively easy. It indicates that active blood glucose monitoring is needed for patients with severe pneumonia, regardless of diabetes. KIM Eun-song, KIM Ji-yeong, and KIM Seong-ho (4th grade of YU College of Medicine) participated in the study and Professor MOON Joon-seong and Professor JEONG Seung-min of Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine led the study. The thesis was published in latest issue (October, 2022) of Annals of Medicine, having 5.348 of IF, an international academic journal in general medicine and internal medicine. The research team showed its successive research plan by saying, “We are planning a study using a continuous blood glucose meter that can more accurately determine blood glucose variability than the fingertip blood glucose measurement method.” Meanwhile, Department of Internal Medicine of YU College of Medicine strengthens research capability of faculty students with operation of Endocrinal Class System. They are improving their research capability as medical personnel from the time of faculty students by guiding 3rd grade students for medical research and preparation of theses and by motivating participation and thesis presentation in academic conferences in/out of university.
